A few days ago social media consultant Pippa Akram took to Twitter, after accidentally stumbling upon Instagram’s latest project. She shared this screenshot with her followers:

As of right now, most of us are only able to follow people, but it looks like Instagram is out to fix this problem. Mashable reports that they have:

reached out to Instagram for comment on the feature, which appears to be available in limited capacity for select users in certain regions. Instagram frequently tests new features, which may or may not be released publicly, on a small pool of users.

Although in the testing phase, this new option would be warmly welcomed by a majority of the platform’s community. The feature will make it much easier to stay on top of trending hashtags and breaking news, meaning that Instagram will become radically more informative.

It’s interesting to note that this is also the first time this option is available in-app. Although Twitter does have an option to follow hashtags, it is done via integration of other platforms such as TweetDeck and Hootsuite.

Considering that it has been some time since Instagram released a big update, this is pretty exciting news!

Do you this this new feature will be a hit or a flunk?
