Looking for an Uber? Try Google Maps.

Google Maps is expanding its functions so that now you can hail an Uber directly within the app. Previously, you could use Google Maps to find a nearby Uber, but to actually order one, you had to use the app. Now, all you have to do is sign your Uber information into Google Maps and you’re set. The same service is not available to users of the other major car service, Lyft.

In addition to letting users order Ubers, Google Maps is also testing a new feature with some users that helps drivers find parking places. The feature does not always give exact data, but Google says it’s still working out the kinks. What is really striking about it though is the way it uses other Google services to create a new one. Slate reports on how Google probably does this.

It’s not wholly clear at this point where Google is pulling its parking data from. (Google has not yet responded to a request for comment; we’ll update if they provide any additional information.) There is, however, a possible clue in the feature’s apparent limitation to “public destinations.” In late 2016, the company debuted a feature that showed both how busy your destination would likely be and how long people tend to stay there. The new parking information may well piggyback on the data collection and analysis systems powering that earlier features.

That’s the power of using one company to perform many services. As more apps appear for individual functions, Google is trying to consolidate services and keep people using its own apps for every task.
