Dozens of new apps get released daily, but more often than not, most seem to end up being fairly frivolous. Every now and then though, a new app will come to light that pushes the boundary of how we use technology as a society, to better both ourselves and those around us. Samsung has just made a giant leap in that direction with a dedicated Backup Memory app.

Backup Memory is a collaborative project that aims to assist people who suffer from Alzheimer disease in maintaining some independence and self-sufficiency while combatting the disease’s effects. The new Android app is designed to help early-onset patients recall friends and relatives by recognizing when registered individuals are nearby, and then sending an alert to the user that includes uploaded photos and memories to facilitate the recognition of their loved ones. The app uses bluetooth to discover nearby phones that are also running Backup Memory, and then identifies each user appropriately.

For the time being, it functions pretty basically. However, it is already proving to be useful to patients through early testing by slowing down the effects of the disease and making their lives a little easier. With such promising test results, we can’t wait to see what other great advancements Samsung has in store for us down the road.
