Aereo is an internet-television service, that has come under fire for supposedly violating broadcaster’s rights by setting up farms of mini antennas and charging their subscribers for rented access to each one, meaning that Aereo doesn’t have to pay the retransmission fees that have become increasingly important to broadcaster’s total revenue.

The question of Aereo’s legality is now in the hands of the Supreme Court, and their decision will spell out the fate of Aereo and possibly the future of television.

Although it makes sense why the broadcast industry would go after a company like Aereo so vigorously, it doesn’t seem like the relatively small company poses that big of a threat to some.  Naveen Chopra, TiVo’s chief financial officer, stated that he didn’t see Aereo as a competitor, because Aereo can’t offer content like HBO and ESPN.

Although Aereo might not revolutionize the market themselves, their fight for a new way to watch tv and the antenna-farm concept that could very well be used by a larger company in a successful attack on the television industry.
